A Canadian Biochemist

This week's citation classic on The Evilutionary Biologist is really a classic. It's the Journal of Biological Chemistry paper on site-directed mutagenesis from Michael Smith's lab at the University of British Columbia.

Michael Smith, who died in 2000, won the Nobel Prize in 1993 for his work on site-directed mutagenesis.

A couple of weeks ago I pooked fun at John Dennehy's selection of a Richard Dawkins paper for his citation classic series [It Happens to All of Us Eventually]. This week John writes,
Any connection between a recent Sandwalk post, the fact that Smith is Canadian and that this article is biochemical in bent is purely coincidental.
I think we can all appreciate that this is just a coincidence. We expect you to recognize all outstanding Canadian biochemists on the grounds that they are truly excellent scientists and not just because you are pandering to your neighbors up north.1

I'll assume that the last citation classic was just a temporary moment of insanity.

1. Although a little pandering never hurt anyone. You never know when you might have to emigrate.

Emigration was on my mind 8 years ago, but hopefully that's daylight ahead at the end of the tunnel. On the other hand, it might be a train named John McCain.

FINAL DRAFT FOR WORLD-WIDE CIRCULATION:

now with EMBEDDED VIDEOS!

please FWD all your appreciations to randi@randi.org and
richard.dawkins@oum.ox.ac.uk and myersp@morris.umn.edu

SEE HOW WE CAUSED THE PRESIDENT OF AMERICAN ATHEISTS, ELLEN JOHNSON,
TO QUIT HER JOB AND STOPPED RANDI'S MILLION DOLLAR PARANORMAL
CHALLENGE:

for randi & dawkins and all the so-called "critical thinkers"

the ORIGINAL *KING OF TERROR* VIDEO.....

the *MODEL* of mental health:

"Look at the ANGLE OF THE KEY....see that, see that...."

what an idiot this Randi is.....a REAL CRITICAL THINKER....

Visit:

http://nostradamus-usa.netfirms.com

to see how we stopped the MILLION DOLLAR PARANORMAL challenge.....
watch carefully the consequences of Randi's *idea*.....

For over 40 years James Randi Zwigert (is this even a REAL NAME?) has
had total control over who and how the testing was conducted, yet
despite all this he has terminated the challenge.

The ONLY REASON why the challenge was stopped is because he lost and
refused to pay.
Apparently, Randi likes to break the rules when it serves him:

"14. This prize will continue to be offered until it is awarded. Upon
the death of James Randi, the administration of the prize will pass
into other hands, and it is intended that it continue in force. "

Great force.....it's over......

where is my MILLION DOLLARS, you LITTLE *NO-NAME* FRAUD
PS: Almost Forgot: Love the IRONY of the *BULLSHIT* sign over Randi's
ugly head....

I guess it depends on how you define a citation classic; it has been cited 471 times, which is a good amount. Most recently in:

Toju, H. (2008) Fine-scale local adaptation of weevil mouthpart length and camellia pericarp thickness: Altitudinal gradient of a putative arms race. Evolution, 62, 1086-1102.

Still, it's got a long way to go to beat:

Hamill OP, et al. (1981) Improved patch clamp techniques for high resolution current recording from cells and cell-free membrane patches. Pflugers Archiv, 391, 85-100.

This paper has been cited 15,559 times (as of now). I dunno if this is the most cited paper ever. Anyone any ideas? It must surely be the highest cited paper since the early 80s.

Back in 1988, the most cited paper was Lowry et al. (1951) with 187,652 citations. The second most cited paper was authored by my friend Uli Laemmli (1970) with 59,759 citations.

The Most Cited Papers of All Time.

Does anyone know of a more recent list?
